Reviews

"An upbeat, entertaining, brilliantly-balanced sound from a beautifully-made pair of speakers"

"The B&W 606 speakers feature a typically smart design, come in the perfect medium-sized speaker form, and ultimately deliver an exciting, engaging and perfectly-poised sound. Building on the all-conquering B&W 685 S2 speakers, the 606s could be an even bigger success."

"B&W 606s have bigger and better bass—especially at higher volume levels—than you’d expect from such small cabinets and a gloriously rich and warm midrange complemented by a nicely balanced treble"

Read Review by Australian Hi-Fi Magazine

An amplifier remains the beating heart of any high-performance audio system, but in this age a truly versatile integrated amp needs to cover many bases – digital and analogue sources, wireless connectivity for portable devices, a phono stage to cater for vinyl playback, amplification for headphones as well as speakers… That’s a lot to pack in, whilst keeping performance high and the price tag affordable – and yet, that’s exactly what the 6000A delivers.

Outwardly, the 6000A bears strong resemblance to the 8300A with its rotary controls and large, central OLED display. Unlike its costlier, analogue-only sibling, it incorporates high-quality D/A conversion, enabling digital sources to be connected directly without an external DAC. It supplies four digital inputs, three line-level analogue inputs, an input for a turntable, wireless connectivity via Bluetooth and a dedicated headphone amp, in addition to its ability when driving loudspeakers.

Much effort has been made to ensure the 6000A’s digital circuitry delivers the level of quality one might expect of a high-performance standalone DAC. As ever, Audiolab has turned to the ES9018 Sabre32 Reference chip family to perform D/A conversion, utilising ESS Technology’s 32-bit HyperStream architecture and Time Domain Jitter Eliminator to deliver ultra-low noise and high dynamic range.

No company knows more about making the most of this technically excellent, but challenging, DAC technology than Audiolab. If the circuitry that surrounds the ES9018 is not of sufficient standard, the resulting sound can seem a little cold and hard; treat it right, however, and the level of musical expression that this chip digs from the digital signal is captivating. Audiolab’s original, universally acclaimed M-DAC was one of the first home audio components to incorporate an ES9018 chip back in 2011, and the company has been honing its implementation ever since.

"The Audiolab’s clean, crisp presentation comes through across the analogue and digital inputs alike. The DAC inside the 6000A is of a good standard, and it’s impressive to hear such a capable and composed sound at this price."

Tellurium Q Blue Speaker Cables 2 x 2.5m

Blue Speaker Cable

Tellurium Blue is the entry level speaker cable that was designed to be the companion to Tellurium Black and has been described by one well known manufacturer of speakers as having “good mid, but softer sounding” than the Tellurium Black. While having great detail and phase control is less revealing of a system than the Black.

HiFi World has described the most noticeable qualities of this cable as being, “a welcome absence of muddle..” and, “a more neutral, focused, precise aura settled on the music. In fact the Blue cables exhibited a tremendous sense of control; something that I've never heard from any cable at this price point.”

The DALI OBERON 5 is the ultimate performer - combining DALI ideas, traditions and inventions. It's a compact and elegant floor-standing speaker, housing 2 x 5¼” wood fibre based woofers with SMC and the series’ wide bandwidth 29 mm ultra-lightweight soft dome tweeter. This slim floor-stander will surprise with its ability to deliver a deep firm bass together with a clear and well defined mid-range and airy high frequencies. The OBERON 5 will impress with its natural and lifelike reproduction of any music or movie sound track.

DB Technology (Double Brace Technology)

"Mass absorbs energy - lost energy equals lost music!"

Rega has pioneered the use of lightweight rigid plinths. Clever use of lightweight particulate core with a highly rigid phenolic resin skin became the foundations of the high level of performance achieved by the now iconic original Planar range.

The new Planar 3 takes this design philosophy to the next level. A lightweight acrylic laminated plinth strengthened using a new improved double brace system mounted specifically where the increased rigidity is required (between the tonearm mounting and the main hub bearing) which forms a structurally sound "stressed beam" assembly. This rigid plinth design prevents energy absorption and unwanted resonance, which will add unnatural distortions to the music.

Equally, heavier mass can transfer more unwanted energy, such as motor or bearing noise directly into the rotating record. The use of braces instead of the complete skin allows double thickness phenolic resin in these key areas while providing further weight reduction to the plinth which directly addresses the issue of mass absorption and unwanted energy transmission.

Rega Elys 2 Moving Magnet (MM) Phono cartridge

A multi award winning, hand built moving magnet cartridge with three point mounting system.

Each one of Rega's moving magnet cartridges are meticulously hand assembled to the highest standard by our highly trained technicians. The design and assembly procedure are focused on one simple goal, extracting as much music from your vinyl as possible.

Each one uses a pair of parallel wound coils, which are then carefully assembled on custom jigs to create a working stereo generator. Each cartridge is then tested and checked over two days to ensure all of the strict parameters for each model are met before either packing or fitting to a Rega turntable.

The Audiolab 6000CDT is a dedicated CD transport using the same slot loading mechanism made famous by the Audiolab 8300CD. This CD mechanism uses a read-ahead digital buffer to reduce disc read failures and delivers the highest level of digital signal extraction from a wide range of CDs. It will read scratched and damaged CDs that are unreadable by conventional mechanisms.

The digital clock is controlled by a temperature compensated crystal oscillator that makes sure the digital output from both coax and optical sockets has minimum jitter. In addition the coax output is fed from a differential line driver, ensuring a robust, clearly defined signal reaches the accompanying DAC.

By mounting the transport in its own, electromagnetically shielded enclosure, and including a dedicated power supply, the digital signal extraction from any CD is as precise as can be managed.

The Audiolab 600CDT also features switchable Auto Standby as display on/off functions.

"No two ways about it, the Audiolab 6000CDT is a CD transport bargain - a true quality item at a price that often doesn't buy you very much of anything. Everything from its look and feel to the way it plays compact discs is worthy of respect."
